New blog - GodBricks

Hey all,

I've continued my blog proliferation with a new blog, GodBricks. As with my existing blogs, there will be a specific theme - the overlap of LEGO building and religious themes. Religion has been at the heart of much of the great art and architecture for millenia, and LEGO building is no different. I'm going to try to feature creations such as cathedrals, mosques, minifigs based on religious figures, illustrations of biblical or other stories, etc, from all faith traditions. There will be overlap with my existing blogs, as I have already, for instance, highlighted vignettes of stories from the Book of Mormon, a microscale cathedral, and a miniland-scale Mary and Jesus nativity scene. Please check out GodBricks and let me know what you think. I've also started a related Flickr group, LEGO and God, with the same theme.

Japanese event

Xtcbz has posted pictures from a LEGO event in (presumably) Japan. I recognize a display by the AFOL group Brick Fan Town, but there are also some creations that are definitely by LEGO, presumably including this large miniland display. Does anyone know more about this event - where/when it was and who was involved?

It's a duck blur

While AFOLs in the US were gathering for Brickfest, our Austrian counterparts were celebrating Wunderwelt Modellbau. Doris and Manfred Feichtl brought a wonderful Ducktales layout, with Donald's house and Uncle Scrooge's money bin with all the familiar characters, including the Beagle Boys trying to break in. House

Last fall at the Twin Cities Brick Expo, Dave Savage displayed this house at a couple of different scales. The miniland scale version opens up and is at least partially finished inside. Does anyone know if this is Dave's own house? Photo credits to garthdanielson and Bisonfuehrer.

BrickJournal

I recently picked up BrickJournal 4 Vol 2 at my local LEGO store. I know, I'm behind - issue 5 is coming out already. Anyway, there are a couple of items for the Miniland Fan. Didier Enjeray wrote an article with instructions on how to build a pair of miniland figs. There's also a feature article on the builder MonsterBrick that includes his Tinkerbell. Hmm, does this actually count as miniland? It's miniland building techniques, but since she's a pixie, it's pretty much built at a 1:1 scale.

Table full of Lino

BrickFest is on this weekend in Portland. It looks like Lino Martins brought a ton of miniland vehicles, many of which have been previously featured here. Photo credits to Bill Ward of the Brickpile.

Some miniland reading

Three years ago Allan Bedford published the Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide. It's a great entry into learning how to build with LEGO, and at least at one point was sold in the official LEGO stores. Thanks are due to Didier Enjary, who pointed out that you can download and read Chapter 4: L'ECHELLE MINILAND: UN MONDE ENTIER EN MINIATURE for free. That translates to "Miniland Scale: A Whole World in Miniature." As you may have guessed, this chapter is from the French translation of the book, but even if you do not parlez Francaise, I'd still download the chapter as there are many pictures that will help you with building at this scale. Better yet, follow the link and buy the whole book.

Happy Birthday to Legoland

Legoland California recently celebrated it's 10th birthday with the world's largest birthday cake, depicting scenes from around the park, including miniland figs visiting a Miniland scaled to miniland scale and a scaled version of a lifesize sculpture found outside of various LEGO stores. This cake is on its way to Brickfest this weekend, so we'll probably see more pics as people start posting galleries. Thanks to Model Building Secrets and Brick Star for the heads-up and photo credits.

Happy Saint Patrick's Yesterday

Oops, I'm a day late on this. Blame it on the green beer. Every month there is a free event at official LEGO stores where kids are able to build, and keep, Monthly Mini Models. This month, the model was a Leprachaun, designed by Erik Varszegi. Thanks to Dave Shaddix for the photo and Mariann of Model Building Secrets for the heads-up.

Box o' blocks

At the recent Toy Fair, LEGO showed off their 2009 products to retailers. All of the big news seems to be about upcoming sets in the various themes like Star Wars, Castle and Indiana Jones, the upcoming new Space Police line and an announcement of a partnership with Disney for new licensed themes. Perhaps less prominent were some back-to-the-basics Creator sets of simple bricks. Their display shows you don't need fancy specialized pieces to build miniland figs.

Speaking of "on my knees" ...

Congratulations to Troy Cobb and Lacey Williams on their engagement. Troy proposed at Legoland California, and the Master Model Builders were in on it. A bride and groom, along with a sign popping the question, were strategically displayed in Miniland for the big moment.

Tractor

I think this is at about the right scale for this blog. Even if not, you should definitely check out Steven Marshall's tractor.

Hail to the chief, again

Kristi Klein notes how they updated the Obama inauguration scene at Legoland to match the clothes the participants were actually wearing. So here is her reconfiguration of the Obama family. More on Mariann's blog.

Common objects

Miniland building isn't all about the people (or cars). You could build just about any common object to fill up your miniland world, like this snowblower by Alexandr, a treadmill by yck888, or, perhaps my favorite, a porta-potty by Jarda. On this last, from his Brickshelf it looks like Jarda is assembling the pieces to make a construction site at this scale.

LEGO Transportation, part 2

A couple of days ago I noted the Wheels, Wings and Waves—a LEGO® World of Transportation currently showing at the Science World museum in Vancouver. Apparently part of this display was built by Robin Sathers, of Brickville Designworks. He said that after the exhibit is done in Vancouver, it will go to Regina in May. If you're in Canada, or can get there, keep an eye on the Brickville events page to see when this display will come to a museum near you. I'm hoping this will come south eventually so those of us in the US will have a chance to see it as well.
