Here in New York City, planners have realized the easiest way to get space back for people is to simply paint the street tan, set up some chairs, and call it a plaza. . . . For the first time in my life, I sat in Times Square and enjoyed myself. I was proud to be a New Yorker, and proud to live in a city that is starting to understand that human interaction is more important than cars-per-minute and travel lanes.

Reclaiming space
Recently, New York City closed Times Square to traffic, or, as Sean Kenney puts it, they finally opened the area to pedestrians. As he writes in his Reclaiming Space:
