Mini LEGO Con

At a couple of recent AFOL events Steve Oakes and Mariann Asanuma displayed a miniland scale con, full of minilanders displaying microscale MOCs, sometimes renditions of actual MOCs that had appeared at previous cons. Now Todd Webb and Dan Pikora (of Fascinating LEGO of the Day) have expanded on that idea. At the various BrickFairs (and other AFOL gatherings), they are setting up miniland-scale layouts of the entire convention layout. Attendees are invited to bring miniland scale versions of themselves and microscale versions of their MOCs, to recreate the whole convention at a smaller scale. There's a Flickr group to share photos and help coordinate future events. Here's part of the layout from BrickFair Alabama. They're hoping to make much more complete displays at upcoming cons. So if you're attending BrickFair NE this weekend, try and put together a minilander of yourself to add to the display.

Who is this

This figure was on display at BrickWorld. That spaceship sitting on the bench next to him looks familiar, so I'm guessing this is a portrait of a specific AFOL and his MOC. I'm not much of a space guy, so I don't really know who built what - could anyone help identify the fig, and also the builder? Maybe this is one of the guys who makes frog-driven spaceships?

MiniBrickWorld

Mariann Asanuma brought this miniland scale AFOL convention to BrickWorld, complete with microscale MOCs on display. Now all she needs is for one of those MOCs to be of microscale figs displaying their nanoscale MOCs. And of course one of those would be of nanofigs looking at atomic-scale MOCs.

Is it safe to go back in the water?

Nope - by Andrew Lee - note the frickin' laser beam.

Building LEGO

Someone (who?) at Brickvention made this great LEGO builder.

Mike Crowley

Sad news that Mike Crowley, aka Count Blockula, passed away two days ago. Mike was a great builder, and he did a lot of building at above fig scale. These aren't all precisely miniland scale, but check out galleries such as his Sesame Street, Cantina, SW miniland and Mario Karts.

Darlings

Sadly, earlier this year the LEGO community lost one of our own, Heatherlegogirl. She designed these almost-miniland-scale people that she called Darlings. At this upcoming BrickCon, several builders are going to be bringing Darlings as a tribute to heather. If you want to join in, you can build your own.

Gary's gotta be rollin' on

Remember Miniland Gary? He's about to move on to another AFOL, but before he goes Ryan found one last picture from Legoland Florida.

Heather Braaten

Last week I posted the news across my blogs that HeatherLEGOgirl was missing, but yesterday we received news that, sadly, her body has been found. I just wanted to repost her great dollhouse here as a little memory.

Where in the world is Gary?

I've previously noted the travels of miniland Gary. Well, he hasn't been idle. He apparently got to spend his winter break in Florida, where he went to Legoland, DisneyWorld and Epcot. Unfortunately he seems to have lost his head in a tragic accident.

Where in the world is Carm... er... miniland Gary

So miniland Gary came to BrickCon again, but he didn't go home with Nathan, instead, he left with Guy Himber.

Gary's travels

Following up on yesterday's post, last year Nathan brought his miniland Gary to BrickCon, but he got lost. He was rescued by some kind AFOLs, who took him on a global trek for the next year, taking in various sites around the US, and also the homeland - Billund Denmark.

Gary on the move

Okay, I saw something from BrickCon, but to fully appreciate it we have to go back a bit. You may all remember the video from a few years back where some Indiana Jones and LEGO fans recreated the famous scene of Indy running from the giant ball, but with a guy running from a giant LEGO ball rolling after him down a San Francisco street. Okay, it turned out their ball was actually a huge styrofoam ball covered with a skin of baseplates, but that doesn't take away from the utter coolness. Anyway, in 2009, Mythbusters tried it out. In the process they went to Legoland and enlisted Gary McIntire (and, IIRC, a bunch of SandLUGgers) to help build a giant LEGO ball. Be sure to watch the video linked. Anyway, on to this blog. Nathan Proudlove commemorated this with his own Miniland version of Gary and the giant ball.
